What is the ruling on buying tobacco for someone who uses it?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: My father smokes, and he orders me to go to the market to buy him tobacco. Should I obey him? And if I obey him, is there a sin on me? Knowing that if I do not obey him, problems may arise. Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
A: It is obligatory for your father to leave tobacco; because of the many harms in it, and it is among the impurities that Allah the Exalted has forbidden in His saying about His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): [Al-A'raf: 157]. And Allah the Exalted has only made lawful for His servants the good things, as in this noble verse from Surat al-A'raf, and as in His saying in Surat al-Ma'idah: [Al-Ma'idah: 4]. So the Exalted made it clear that He has not made lawful for His servants except the good things, and tobacco is not among the good things, but rather it is among the harmful impurities.
So it is obligatory for your father and for others who smoke to repent to Allah the Exalted from that, and not to sit with those who smoke. It is not permissible for you to assist him in that, nor in any other of the sins; because of the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Al-Ma'idah: 2]. And it is upon you and your brothers and your uncles, if you have brothers and uncles, to advise him and warn him against smoking; acting in accordance with the mentioned verse and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): It was said: For whom, O Messenger of Allah? He said: Sahih Muslim 55a Al-Imam Muslim narrated it in his Sahih.
And I ask Allah to guide your father to good, and to help him to repent from this sin and others, and to make you among those who assist him in good. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the Near.
