Does smoking invalidate the ablution?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A question from A. S. H. from Sudan says: If a person performs the ablution, then smokes and prays immediately, and perhaps leads the people in prayer, and we have told those who do this that smoking invalidates the ablution, but they said to us: This is not correct, so what is the ruling in this?
A: Smoke does not invalidate the ablution, but it is forbidden and abominable, and it must be abandoned. However, if a person smokes it and prays, his prayer is not invalidated and his ablution is not invalidated; because it is a type of known herb, but it was forbidden due to its harm. So it is obligatory for the one who uses it to beware of it, and to leave it, and to guard against its evil. It is not permissible for him to buy it or use it, and trading in it is not permissible. Rather, it is obligatory for the one who uses it to repent to Allah and to leave trading in it. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: Then He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: [Al-Ma'idah: 4]. So Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has not made lawful for us except the good things, which are the nourishing and beneficial ones. And Allah, the Exalted, said in describing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): [Al-A'raf: 157].
And there is no doubt that smoking and intoxicants are all among the abominables, and likewise the known intoxicating hashish is also among the abominables, so it must be abandoned. And likewise the known qat in Yemen is among the abominables; because it causes great harm, and it leads to the wasting of times and the loss of prayers. So it is obligatory for the one who uses it to leave it, and to repent to Allah from it, and to preserve his health, his wealth, and his times in what benefits him; because it is obligatory for the believer to beware of what harms his religion and his worldly life. And likewise smoking and types of intoxicants, one must beware of all of them with sincere, earnest repentance for what has passed. And trading in that is not permissible, rather it is obligatory to leave it and not trade in it, because it harms the Muslims.
We ask Allah for guidance for everyone and success.
