The Correct Method of the Adhan
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: How is the correct adhan performed? And what is your opinion regarding the additions recited after "La ilaha illa Allah"?
A: The correct adhan is the one the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught his Ummah. Bilal used to call the adhan with it in his presence until he passed away (peace and blessings be upon him). The mu'adhdhins used to call the adhan with it during his lifetime in Makkah and in al-Madinah. It is the adhan known today, consisting of fifteen phrases: (Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah, Hayya 'ala al-salah, Hayya 'ala al-salah, Hayya 'ala al-falah, Hayya 'ala al-falah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah).
This is the adhan with which Bilal used to call in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until Allah took him. In the Fajr prayer, he added: (Al-salah khayrun min al-nawm) twice, after the "Hayya" phrases and before the final takbir.
As for what some people add: (Hayya 'ala khayr al-'amal) or (Ashhadu anna 'Aliyan wali Allah), as some of the Shi'ah do, this is denounced and a religious innovation that is not permissible. Likewise, what some people add of sending blessings upon the Prophet during the adhan when they say: (La ilaha illa Allah), by adding: (Salatun 'ala al-Nabi) and raising their voice with it during the adhan or in the loudspeaker, this is not permissible and is also a religious innovation. However, one should send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to oneself, not in the adhan.
When one finishes the adhan, what is prescribed for the Muslim is to send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then to say: (O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the established prayer, grant Muhammad the intercession and the excellence, and raise him to the praiseworthy station which You have promised him, for You do not break Your promise). This is prescribed for every Muslim man and woman after the adhan. The mu'adhdhin likewise, when he says: (La ilaha illa Allah), it is prescribed for him to send blessings upon the Prophet afterwards, just like others, then he says:Sahih al-Bukhari 4719, but it is not permissible to raise that with the adhan; because the adhan ends with the saying: (La ilaha illa Allah).
There is no harm in the one who responds being heard by those around him so that they may follow his example; for it is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Mishkat al-Masabih 657 Thus he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, narrated by Muslim in the Sahih, from the hadith of Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both). It is a recommended practice for everyone: the mu'adhdhin and the listener, men and women, in the city and the countryside, and in every place. After finishing the adhan, they say: (O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad), or (O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions), with a voice other than the voice of the adhan, with a low voice, not with the adhan.
Then after that, he says:Sahih al-Bukhari 4719. As al-Bukhari narrated in the Sahih, from Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Sahih al-Bukhari 614 Thus the hadith came from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Al-Bayhaqi added at the end: Muwatta Malik 20:132 with a good chain. This is what is prescribed.
As for the addition in the adhan by the mu'adhdhin saying: (Hayya 'ala khayr al-'amal), or (Ashhadu anna 'Aliyan wali Allah), or anything else, it is a religious innovation with no basis, as mentioned above, and it is not permissible to say it; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 1718b which Muslim included in his Sahih, from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her).
And in the Sahih of Muslim as well, from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he used to say in the Friday sermon:Sahih Muslim 867a.
And the hadiths in this meaning are many.
And success is from Allah.

اللهم رب هذه الدعوة التامة، والصلاة القائمة، آت محمدًا الوسيلة والفضيلة، وابعثه مقامًا محمودًا الذي وعدتهThere is no harm in the one who responds being heard by those around him so that they may follow his example; for it is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
When you hear the mu’adhdhin repeat what he says, then invoke a blessing on me, for everyone who invokes one blessing on me will receive ten blessings from God. Then ask God to give me the wasila , which is a rank in paradise fitting for only one of God’s servants, and I hope that I may be the one. If anyone asks that I be given the wasila , he will be assured of my intercession.
Then after that, he says:

Lord of this perfect call (perfect by not ascribing partners to You) and of the regular prayer which is going to be established, give Muhammad the right of intercession and illustriousness, and resurrect him to the best and the highest place in Paradise that You promised him (of)], then my intercession for him will be allowed on the Day of Resurrection

The best of the speech is embodied in the Book of Allah, and the best of the guidance is the guidance given by Muhammad. And the most evil affairs are their innovations; and every innovation is error.
