Q: Whatis the ruling on the mu'adhdhin saying in his adhan: "Hasten to the best of deeds"?
A: The adhan is one of the acts of worship, and the principle in acts of worship is that they are based on specific evidence, and it is not said that an act is prescribed unless there is evidence from the Book, the Sunnah, or scholarly consensus. To say that this act of worship is prescribed without any legal evidence is to speak about Allah without knowledge. And Allah the Exalted said:
Say, "My Lord has only forbidden immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed - and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with Allah that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about Allah that which you do not know."
[Al-A'raf 7:33]
And Allah the Exalted said:
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledgeوَلاَ تَقْفُ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ
[Al-Isra 17:36]
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718a
, and in another narration:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملاً ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
. Once this is known, the lawful adhan established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) consists of fifteen phrases: "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah, Hayya 'ala al-salah, Hayya 'ala al-salah, Hayya 'ala al-falah, Hayya 'ala al-falah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah." This is what is established that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Bilal to call the adhan with, as mentioned by the authors of the Sunan and Musnads. Except in the adhan for the Fajr prayer, where it is established that the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) mu'adhdhin used to add after the "Hayya" phrases: "Al-salah khayrun min al-nawm, al-salah khayrun min al-nawm" (Prayer is better than sleep, prayer is better than sleep). The four Imams agreed on the permissibility of this, because the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) approval of this phrase from Bilal indicates the permissibility of saying it.
As for the mu'adhdhin saying in the Fajr adhan: "Hayya 'ala khayr al-'amal" (Come to the best of deeds), it is not established, and it was not practiced by the people of the Sunnah . This is one of the innovations of the Rafidah . Whoever does it should be told that it is wrong to the extent sufficient to make him refrain from adding this extra phrase to the adhan. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
