The Description of the Lawful Adhan and the Ruling on Adding to It

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
How is the correct adhan performed? And what is your opinion regarding the additions recited after "La ilaha illa Allah"?

Answer:
The valid adhan is the one the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught his Ummah. Bilal used to call the adhan with it in front of him until he passed away (peace and blessings be upon him). The mu'adhdhins used to call the adhan with it during his lifetime in Makkah, al-Madinah, and elsewhere. It is the adhan known today, consisting of fifteen phrases: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah, Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah, Hayya 'ala al-salah, Hayya 'ala al-salah, Hayya 'ala al-falah, Hayya 'ala al-falah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah. This is the adhan with which Bilal used to call in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until Allah took him.
In the Fajr adhan, there is an addition: "As-salatu khayrun min an-nawm" (Prayer is better than sleep) in the adhan called out after the appearance of dawn, which is the adhan of the morning. He says after the "Hayya" phrases: "As-salatu khayrun min an-nawm, as-salatu khayrun min an-nawm," then he says after that: "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah." This is specific to the Fajr adhan called out at the appearance of dawn: "As-salatu khayrun min an-nawm, as-salatu khayrun min an-nawm."
As for what some people add, "Hayya 'ala khayr al-'amal" (Hasten to the best of deeds), or "Ash-hadu anna 'Aliyan wali Allah" (I bear witness that 'Ali is the close friend of Allah), and likewise what some people add of sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) after the adhan when he says: "La ilaha illa Allah," raising their voice with it along with the adhan, or in the loudspeaker, this is not permissible. This is a religious innovation. However, one should send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) between himself and Allah, not in the adhan. When the adhan is concluded, it is prescribed for the Muslim to send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and then say:
O Allah, the Lord of this complete call and of this prayer, which is going to be established! Give Muhammad Al-Wasila and Al-Fadila and raise him to Al-Maqam-al-Mahmud which You have promised himاللهم رب هذه الدعوة التامة والصلاة القائمة آت محمدًا الوسيلة والفضيلة، وابعثه مقامًا محمودًا الذي وعدته إنك لا تخلف الميعاد
Sahih al-Bukhari 4719
. This is prescribed for every Muslim man and woman after the adhan. The mu'adhdhin likewise, when he says: "La ilaha illa Allah," it is prescribed for everyone after the adhan to send blessings upon the Prophet: "O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad," "O Allah, send blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon his family and his Companions." If he says: "O Allah, send blessings and peace," it is more complete, upon our Prophet and upon his family and his Companions. Then he says: "O Allah, Lord of this perfect call..." to the end. But not with the adhan, rather with a voice other than the voice of the adhan. A low voice that those around him hear is fine, but not with the adhan. The adhan ends when he says: "La ilaha illa Allah." He turns off the microphone, it is finished, the adhan is finished. And if it is not with a microphone, likewise it is finished, nothing is appended to it. Then he sends blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) between himself and Allah, and there is no harm if those around him hear it so they may follow his example, for it is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
When you hear the Mu'adhdhin, repeat what he says, then invoke a blessing on me, for everyone who invokes a blessing on me will receive ten blessings from Allah; then beg from Allah al-Wasila for me, which is a rank in Paradise fitting for only one of Allah's servants, and I hope that I may be that one. If anyone who asks that I be given the Wasila, he will be assured of my intercession.
Sahih Muslim 384
. Thus said he (peace and blessings be upon him), narrated by Muslim in the Sahih.
This is a recommended practice for everyone; for the mu'adhdhin and the listener, men and women, in the city and the countryside, in every place, after the completion of the adhan, he says: "O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad," or "O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon his family and his Companions..." with a voice other than the voice of the adhan, a low voice, not with the adhan. Then after this he says:
O Allah, the Lord of this complete call and of this prayer, which is going to be established! Give Muhammad Al-Wasila and Al-Fadila and raise him to Al-Maqam-al-Mahmud which You have promised himاللهم رب هذه الدعوة التامة والصلاة القائمة آت محمدًا الوسيلة والفضيلة وابعثه مقامًا محمودًا الذي وعدته
Sahih al-Bukhari 4719
, for al-Bukhari narrated in the Sahih, may Allah have mercy on him, from Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with them both) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Whoever after listening to the Adhan says, 'Allahumma Rabba hadhihi-dda` watit-tammah, was-salatil qa'imah, ati Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilah, wa b`ath-hu maqaman mahmudan-il-ladhi wa`adtahu' [O Allah! Lord of this perfect call (perfect by not ascribing partners to You) and of the regular prayer which is going to be established, give Muhammad the right of intercession and illustriousness, and resurrect him to the best and the highest place in Paradise that You promised him (of)], then my intercession for him will be allowed on the Day of Resurrectionمن قال حين يسمع النداء: اللهم رب هذه الدعوة التامة، والصلاة القائمة آت محمدًا الوسيلة والفضيلة وابعثه مقامًا محمودًا الذي وعدته حلت له شفاعتي يوم القيامة
Sahih al-Bukhari 614
. Thus the hadith came from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Al-Bayhaqi added at the end:
You do not break Your promiseإنك لا تخلف الميعاد
Muwatta Malik 20:132
with a good chain of narration. This is what is prescribed.
As for the addition to the adhan, "Hayya 'ala khayr al-'amal," or "Ash-hadu anna 'Aliyan wali Allah," this is not permissible... it is a religious innovation. And likewise the addition with the adhan: sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with "La ilaha illa Allah" with the voice of the adhan. This is not permissible, rather it is among the religious innovations. But as mentioned before, the mu'adhdhin and the listener send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a voice other than the voice of the adhan; a low voice, not the voice of the adhan.
In the adhan of Abu Mahdhura, there is tarji'. And tarji' is: to recite the two testimonies with a low voice, then to recite them with a raised voice. Thus it becomes nineteen phrases. He says: "Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah, Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah," with a low voice, then he raises his voice with them and repeats them. This is called: tarji'. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught this to Abu Mahdhura, and he used to call the adhan with it in Makkah . If he does it, there is no harm. It is a type of the lawful adhan. But the best is the adhan of Bilal, which he used to call in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Bilal used to call the adhan without tarji' in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in al-Madinah until Allah took his Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Both types are, praise be to Allah, prescribed and permissible, except that the best is what was done in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him), which is no tarji'. And whoever does tarji', there is no harm. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
