Fasting and Prayer of a Woman During Menstruation

Q: The sister who used the initials: A. B. K - from Oran in Algeria says in her letter: We ask you, O Shaykh, to provide us with more authentic statements regarding the fasting and prayer of a woman during menstruation. May Allah reward you with good.

A: If a woman menstruates, she leaves off the prayer and fasting. When she becomes pure, she makes up the days of Ramadan that she did not fast, but she does not make up the prayers she left off. This is based on what al-Bukhari and others narrated regarding the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) explanation of the deficiency in a woman’s religion, in his statement (peace and blessings be upon him): And based on what al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated from Mu’adhah that she asked Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): “Why does the menstruating woman make up the fast but not the prayer?” Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “Are you a Kharijah?” She said: “I am not a Kharijah, but I am asking.” She said: . It was narrated by al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others.
This is from the mercy of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) toward the woman and His gentleness with her; because the prayer is repeated five times every day and night, and menstruation is repeated every month generally, Allah removed from her the obligation of the prayer and making it up; due to the great hardship in making it up. As for fasting, since it is not repeated except once a year, Allah removed from her the fasting during menstruation out of mercy for her, and commanded her to make it up afterwards; to realize the legal benefit in that.
