The Reality of the Awliya

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Who are the awliya (close friends of Allah)? We want a detailed explanation; because in some neighboring countries, you must take a method from a shaykh so that he becomes an intermediary between you and Allah, is that what they say?

Answer:
The awliya are the people of faith, and you are among them if you are a believer, so you are among them. The awliya of Allah are the people of faith and taqwa (mindfulness of Allah). Allah the Exalted said:
Unquestionably, [for] the allies of Allah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieveأَلَا إِنَّ أَوْلِيَاءَ اللَّهِ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ ۝
[Yunus 10:62]
those who believed and used to fear Allah [Yunus: 62, 63], and He the Exalted said:
and they were not [fit to be] its guardians? Its [true] guardians are not but the righteousوَمَا كَانُوا أَوْلِيَاءَهُ إِنْ أَوْلِيَاؤُهُ إِلَّا الْمُتَّقُونَ
[Al-Anfal: 34].
So the awliya of Allah are the people of faith and taqwa who established tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and were upright upon His religion, so they performed His obligations and left His prohibitions. These are the awliya of Allah, they are the people of faith, and they are the people of taqwa. A sin may occur from them, then they repent, so their faith is completed. A sin may occur from a wali or a believer, then he becomes aware, so he repents; then Allah accepts his repentance. The one who did not repent was a believer with deficient faith and a wali with deficient status, and if he repents, Allah accepts his repentance.
As for what the Sufis say: that the wali is the one who has supernatural events, and has sorcery, and has long, broad claims until it is said: he is the shaykh of the method, and until he is followed, and until he is obeyed in what he wants, and in what he desires, and until the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) are forgotten. This is from the work of Satan, this is from misguidance, and religious innovations, and reprehensible desires—may Allah keep us safe.
