What is the cause of a lack of khushu' in prayer?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is the reason for the lack of khushu' in prayer? And how does a person get rid of it?
A: Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says: [Al-Mu'minun:1-2] And khushu' has causes, and its absence has causes. So there are causes for khushu', which are: submission before Allah, and remembering that you are standing before Him . It was mentioned in an authentic hadith: Sunan an-Nasa'i 1191Hasan (Darussalam), and in another wording: Sahih Muslim 551
So when a person enters into prayer, he is conversing with his Lord; so he remembers this great station, and that he is before Allah, so let him be humble before Allah, and let him devote himself to his prayer, and let him remember the greatness of Allah and that he is before the greatest of the great , and let him devote himself to his prayer, and to his recitation, and to his prostration and bowing, and let him remember everything that is required in this station, and that his heedlessness regarding Allah diminishes his prayer. He should remember this until the heedlessness is removed from him, and until the whispers are removed from him. And he asks his Lord for help with this in his prostration, and at the end of the tashahhud he says: O Allah, help me with khushu', O Allah, make khushu' easy for me, O Allah, protect me from Shaytan and from the evil of my soul. And he asks his Lord, and seeks His help .
A: Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
(1) Certainly will the believers have succeeded: (2) They who are during their prayer humbly submissive
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَWhen any one of you stands in prayer, let him not smooth the pebbles, for he is facing Mercy.
إذا كبَّر أحدُكم فلا يمسح الحصى، فإن الرحمة تُواجههWhen any one of you is engaged in prayer, he is holding intimate conversation with his Lord
إذا قام أحدُكم في الصلاة فإنَّه يُناجي ربهSo when a person enters into prayer, he is conversing with his Lord; so he remembers this great station, and that he is before Allah, so let him be humble before Allah, and let him devote himself to his prayer, and let him remember the greatness of Allah and that he is before the greatest of the great , and let him devote himself to his prayer, and to his recitation, and to his prostration and bowing, and let him remember everything that is required in this station, and that his heedlessness regarding Allah diminishes his prayer.
