What is the reason for the lack of khushu' in prayer?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the reason for the lack of khushu' in prayer? And how does a person get rid of it?

Answer:
Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
(1) Certainly will the believers have succeeded: (2) They who are during their prayer humbly submissiveقَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۝ الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ
[Al-Mu'minun: 1, 2]. Khushu' has causes, and its absence has causes.
The causes of khushu' are: submission before Allah, remembering that you are before Allah, and that you are standing before Him (peace and blessings be upon him) as in the authentic hadith: "None of you should touch a pebble, for he is conversing with his Lord," and in the other wording: "for mercy faces him."
So when a person stands in prayer, he is conversing with his Lord. He should remember this great station and that he is before Allah. Let him be humble before Allah, let him focus on his prayer, let him remember the greatness of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and that he is before the Greatest of the Great (Mighty and Majestic). Let him focus on his prayer, his recitation, his prostration, and his bowing. Let him remember everything required in this station, and that his heedlessness regarding Allah diminishes his prayer. He should remember this so that heedlessness and whispers are removed from him. He should ask his Lord for help with this in his prostration, and at the end of the tashahhud he should say: "O Allah, help me with khushu', O Allah, make khushu' easy for me, O Allah, protect me from Satan and from the evil of my soul." He asks his Lord and seeks His help (Mighty and Majestic).
