Ruling on Delaying and Combining the Prayer for a Kidney Patient
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
I attend the hospital three days a week because I suffer from kidney failure, and I attend sessions on a machine to break down the blood. However, I miss the 'Asr prayer, as I do not finish my treatment until an hour and a half after the 'Asr prayer, and the seating chair is positioned in a direction opposite to the qiblah.
Do I pray in any direction? Or do I pray it after the time has passed? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer:
Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says: : [Surat al-Taghabun: 16]. If you are a patient for whom it is difficult to perform every prayer in its time, combine them before entering the procedure. If that harms you, combine 'Asr with Zuhr by advancing 'Asr. If you were healthy before, but only for the sake of the procedure, there is no harm in delaying the prayer, and you pray it after the procedure is performed. If you are unable to perform it during the procedure, then you delay it, and there is no blame on you for that.
As for after the procedure, pray according to your condition: standing, or sitting, or on your side, or lying down, according to your ability:[At-Taghabun 64:16]. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to 'Imran ibn Husayn when he was ill: Sunan Abi Dawud 952Sahih (Al-Albani). But you, when entering the procedure, are in the ruling of a patient, so there is no harm in advancing the 'Asr prayer with Zuhr if entering the procedure is after Zuhr. If it is before Zuhr, you delay Zuhr with 'Asr. And when you are finished, pray them after the procedure is over and after you are able to do so, even if it is in the time of 'Asr, even if the sun has turned yellow: [At-Taghabun 64:16]. Unless you are able in the time to pray it before the sun turns yellow, then pray it, even by gesturing, even if you are on your side, or lying down, you say takbir and recite, you say takbir and intend ruku' and say: Allahu Akbar, and you intend rising and say: Sami' Allahu li man hamidah, and you intend sujud and say: Subhana Rabbi al-A'la, and you say takbir and intend rising and say: Rabbighfir li, Rabbighfir li, and you say takbir and intend the second prostration and say: Allahu Akbar, and you recite tasbih: Subhana Rabbi al-A'la, Subhana Rabbi al-A'la, and so on. Complete it this way, this way if you can do so. But if your sensation is not with you, you cannot, then delay it until the procedure ends and your sensation returns.
Also, regarding the observation of wudu': every patient must fear Allah and observe: if he can perform wudu', he performs it, or another person performs it for him: he washes his face and hands, wipes his head, and washes his feet. As for what comes out—istinja' and urination and defecation—this is with tissues, he wipes himself with tissues three times or more, and that suffices instead of water. What comes out from the anus and urination is with pure tissues, he wipes if he can, or the nurse wipes him if he cannot, and that suffices instead of water.
And wudu', if he can, he performs it for himself, otherwise another person performs it for him: he washes his face and forearms, wipes his head and ears, and washes his feet if he can. If that is not facilitated, he performs tayammum, earth is placed for him under the chair.
We have written to the former Minister of Health, and he generalized to the hospitals, that they have in a bag, or in a tray under the chair, a little fine earth to wipe from: he strikes with his hands, or brings it close and strikes his hands and wipes his face and palms, and so on. The military hospital here and others, they must observe this, so that the patient has what satisfies his need. If he cannot use water, there should be a vessel at his chair with good, fine earth, or a bag that is opened for him beforehand, he strikes with his hands then wipes his face and palms, or the one in charge of him tells him to strike the earth and wipe his face and palms, and he intends, the patient intends, and this acts on his behalf in wiping his face and palms, with the patient's intention, and this takes the place of purification with water. As for the anus and the front, this is as mentioned before: it is wiped with tissues three times or more, and that suffices instead of istinja'.
