Question:
May Allah reward you. A questioner says:
How can a person avoid the whispers and seduction of Satan in prayer and other than prayer? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good!
Answer:
The answer to this has already been given, and that Satan is eager to corrupt the servant's deeds in prayer and other than prayer. And the way to that is: that he turns to his prayer, and remembers his standing before Allah, and he seeks refuge in Allah from Satan, and he occupies himself with the remembrance of Allah, and reciting the Qur'an, and other than this of what Allah has prescribed in prayer. And he should be mindful of the greatness of Allah, and that he is standing before Him, and that this prayer is a great act of worship, and that it is obligatory upon him, and that it is the pillar of his religion, until he turns to it, and until he is humble in it to his Lord.
And if that overcomes him and becomes frequent, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) guided to the fact that he seeks refuge in Allah from Satan, he spits to his left, even in prayer, he spits to his left, and says: "I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan," he repeats it, for by the permission of Allah he will be safe from his evil if it overcomes him and becomes frequent. He spits to his left and says: "I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan," three times. He spits to his left and says this. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught Uthman ibn Abi al-As, when he said to him: "O Messenger of Allah! Satan has confused my prayer!" So he ordered him to spit to his left, and seek refuge in Allah from Satan three times. So he did that, and Allah protected him from his evil after that.
