The Ruling on a Woman Speaking with a Non-Mahram Man

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
السؤال:
Our sister asks whether it is permissible for a Muslim woman to sit and talk with her sister’s husband in the presence of family members, or whether that is not permissible?

Answer:
There is no blame on a woman speaking with men, provided she observes modesty and hijab, and there is no fitnah (temptation or discord). There is nothing wrong with speaking with her sister’s husband, her husband’s brother, or others, as long as there is no khalwah (seclusion), and the husband, mother, or others are present, without fitnah and without khalwah. That is to say, in a manner that contains no fitnah: ordinary conversation, with no fitnah, no laxity, and no malicious words that lead to corruption. Rather, it is ordinary, sound conversation that contains no fitnah and no evil. There is no blame in that, provided there is no khalwah, whether with her sister’s husband or her husband’s brother, in the presence of her husband, her mother, her brother, or others, without khalwah. However, the conversation must not contain, that is to say, trivialities, no evil, and no invitation to evil. It must be ordinary, sound conversation. Yes.
