The father's obligation toward his needy son who is unable to work

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He has another case, Your Eminence, in which he says: As I mentioned before, I resigned from my job, and I am ill, and I have no income, and I have a large family. When I ask my father and my brothers for help, they refuse to help me and say: You have no right to claim our help, even though when I was working and when I was able to provide, I used to set aside a sum of money for my father. So what is your guidance? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
It is obligatory for your father and your brothers to help you and to give you from their wealth what will support you, if they are able to do so. Perhaps their refusal to help you is intended to encourage you to work so that you do not become lazy, and perhaps they are lying to you regarding your claim of inability. So you should fear Allah, and hasten to work so that you become independent of them and of others. Strive in work in trade, in employment if a permissible and good job becomes available, in service or labor, as a calligrapher, a builder, a blacksmith, or a carpenter. Strive in whatever work you are able to do. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: Which earnings are the purest? He said—(peace and blessings be upon him)—:
A man’s work with his hand and every business transaction which is approvedعمل الرجل بيده، وكل بيع مبرور
Mishkat al-Masabih 2783
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Nobody has ever eaten a better meal than that which one has earned by working with one's own hands. The Prophet (ﷺ) of Allah, David used to eat from the earnings of his manual labor.ما أكل أحد طعامًا خيرًا من أن يأكل من عمل يده، وإن نبي الله داود كان يأكل من عمل يده
Sahih al-Bukhari 2072
.
So fear Allah, work, and strive in any work that yields for you from permissible and good occupations. If you are unable to work, then it is obligatory for them to spend on you. There is no harm in asking your wealthy brothers to help you from zakah and other sources, if you are sincere that you are unable to work and have not been able to find a job.
