Question:
The listener Ahmad 'Abd al-Mu'ti from Egypt sent a question saying: How do I attain khushu' in prayer? And what are the supplications that are recited before prayer, and during prayer, that help me to attain khushu'?
Answer:
Khushu' in prayer is bringing the heart to it before Allah, and turning to it. You should bring to mind the greatness of Allah and that you are standing before Him, hoping for His mercy and fearing His punishment. This brings about khushu', humility, brokenness, and bringing the heart before Allah . You should also supplicate with a humble heart, hoping for Allah's mercy and fearing His punishment, with good supplications that you bring to mind, even if they are not transmitted, even if they are not found in the texts, as long as they are good supplications that contain no sin and no severing of family ties; then there is no harm.
O Allah, forgive me. O Allah, have mercy on me. O Allah, rectify my heart and my deeds. O Allah, guide me to Your straight path. O Allah, protect me from the Fire. O Allah, forgive me and my parents, if your parents are Muslims. O Allah, I ask You for guidance and correctness. O Allah, inspire me with my guidance, and protect me from the evil of my soul. This is in prayer and outside of it, even outside of prayer, when you are in the house, or walking, or lying down, you supplicate with what Allah has pleased of good supplications, transmitted or not transmitted, that contain no sin and no severing of family ties.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: They said: O Messenger of Allah! Then shall we increase? He said: .
So you, O 'Abdullah, are upon good in your supplication to your Lord, and your brokenness before Him, and your khushu' to Him in prayer, in your prostration, or in your bowing, or between the two prostrations, or in standing, in all parts of the prayer. Allah says (Exalted and Majestic is He): [Al-Mu'minun:1] [Al-Mu'minun:2] meaning: they are humble and broken, having brought their hearts before Allah. And if weeping from the fear of Allah is facilitated, it is more complete and more complete.
And among the greatest factors in your khushu' is leaving sins, and being cautious of sins, and striving against your soul to leave them, and repenting to Allah from them.
And among the factors of khushu' is entering prayer with a free heart, having no preoccupations. And if you feel any discomfort, you relieve yourself before prayer; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 560a So if... you have a need to urinate, or defecate; you start with that. If food is present, you start with that. If there is a distracting matter, you remove it and rest from it; so that you enter prayer with a humble heart, a present heart, for the obligatory and the voluntary. Yes.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There is no servant who supplicates to Allah with a supplication that contains no sin and no severing of family ties, but that Allah gives him one of three things: either his supplication is stored for him in the Hereafter, or it is hastened for him in this world, or He averts from him an evil equal to it.
Allah is more.
