The Ruling on a Woman Looking at Men

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
We return at the beginning of this episode to a letter from one of our female listeners. At the end, she signs as your sister in Allah, Nala Al-Asiri from Taif. Our sister Nala, we presented some of her questions in a previous episode, and in this episode she still has a collection of questions. In one of them, she asks and says: What is the ruling on looking at men, and men looking at women? It is mentioned in the Tafsir of Ibn Kathir that it is permissible to look without desire, as it is established in the authentic hadith that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to look at the Abyssinians as they played with their spears on the day of Eid in the mosque, and Aisha, the Mother of the Believers, was behind him looking at them, and he was covering her until she got tired, then she returned. I have heard that this is forbidden. Please guide us to the correct ruling, may Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon His Messenger, upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
So Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) commanded His believing servants to lower their gazes, and He also commanded the believing women to lower their gaze. He said (Exalted and Majestic is He):
Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.
[An-Nur 24:30]
And say to the believing women that they cast down their eyes and guard their private parts [Al-Nur: 30-31].
So lowering the gaze is required. And if a woman sees men without desire, there is no blame on her, just as she looks at them in the markets and in the mosques; there is no blame in that. But for her to lower her gaze as a precaution so that desire does not arise, and so that fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) does not occur, this is required when there is a need for it.
As for if the look is not accompanied by desire, like her look in the markets, the ordinary look, and in the mosque if she enters the mosque to pray with the people, the ordinary look, or at the players, just as Aisha looked at the Abyssinians without desire, then there is no blame in that, and praise be to Allah. Yes.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good.
