A Woman Looking at a Man

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 6072 )
Q: I am a 17-year-old married woman. I left my husband four years ago, and my husband refused to divorce me. I am currently living with my family. Praise be to Allah, I am a Muslim woman who holds firmly to my religion. I fear Allah and I fear falling into a great error. I hope to find the appropriate solution with you. My problem is my sight; I am unable to lower my gaze no matter how much I try. I have tried many times to distance myself from this bad habit, but I have not been able to do so. I ask you to guide me to the right path
for this problem, and if you would be kind enough to mention some hadiths regarding lowering the gaze, thank you.

A: First: The dispute between you and your husband, and his refusal to divorce you, must be referred to the court so that it may rule according to the Shari'ah after verifying the facts. However, reconciliation is better than persisting in the dispute. Second: You must fear Allah the Exalted, lower your gaze, and stay away from places of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation); such as free mixing with non-mahram men, seclusion with a non-mahram man, traveling without a mahram, going out with tabarruj (a woman's display of her adornment), exposing part of the 'awrah (the part of the body that must be covered), and the like; in compliance with the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.
[An-Nur 24:31]
.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
