How to Deal with One Who Drinks Intoxicants and Beats His Wife
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
From the Arab Republic of Egypt, Dakahlia Governorate, the listener (Fahmi . Sh) sent a question saying: My sister’s husband consumes intoxicants. I and some relatives tried to prevent him from drinking intoxicants, but he did not accept the advice and was violent with us. He beats his wife, who is my sister, and insults us with words. Sometimes he drives her and their children out into the street. What is the best solution we can take with this man?
Answer: You must persist in advising him with kind words and a good manner, not with violence and harshness. Seek help from Allah, then from some of your good brothers whom he respects and values, so that they can help you in advising him and guiding him to good. Do not despair, do not despair, and make du'a for him in his absence. Say: “O Allah, guide so-and-so, O Allah, reform him, O Allah, protect him from the evil of his own self and his Shaytan.” And be patient. You must have forbearance, patience, kind words, and a good manner, so that perhaps Allah will guide him through your efforts, and you will have a reward like his. As the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1893a Do not despair. You must use kind words and a good manner, and cooperate with your good brothers in visiting him, advising him, and guiding him to good, so that perhaps Allah will guide him through your efforts. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 1893a You are to be thanked and rewarded. Or, if there is a Shari'ah court in the town and he does not respond, take him to the court regarding the establishment of the hadd punishment upon him, and regarding the matter of his wife.
As for if there is no court that rules by the Shari'ah, then you must persist in advising and guiding him, and cooperate with your good brothers whom he values and sees virtue in. Cooperate with them in directing him and guiding him, so that perhaps Allah will guide him through your efforts. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
