How to Deal with a Wife and Daughters Who Do Not Pray
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The last question we are presenting from our brother in this session says: My wife does not pray, and my daughters do not either, and they do not observe the hijab. What should I do? Guide us. May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
It is obligatory for you to advise your wife and daughters, and to discipline them for abandoning prayer until they correct themselves. This is obligatory upon you. Prayer is the pillar of Islam, and it is the second of the five pillars of Islam. It is the greatest of the pillars after the two testimonies. Whoever preserves it preserves his religion, and whoever neglects it is more neglectful of what is besides it. Allah the Exalted says: [al-Baqarah:238] And He says (Exalted and Majestic is He): [al-Baqarah:43] And He says the Exalted: [al-Tawbah:71].
So it is obligatory upon the believers, men and women, to advise one another, to cooperate in what is right, and to forbid one another from what is wrong. Your wife and daughters are the most deserving of your advice and guidance, your command for them to do what is right, and your prohibition for them from what is wrong. It is not permissible to be lenient in this matter ever, even if it means striking, even striking the wife with a non-harmful strike, and striking the daughters with a non-harmful strike until they correct themselves. Because this prayer is the pillar of Islam. Whoever abandons it commits disbelief (may Allah keep us safe from that). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Ibn Majah 1079Sahih (Darussalam) May Allah keep us safe from that.
So fear Allah, O questioner! And strive for the guidance of your wife and daughters. Also seek help in that from your relatives, such as the maternal uncles of your daughters, the brothers of your wife, her father, and her paternal uncles to help you. Agree with them to help you with your wife and your daughters so that they establish prayer, so that they correct themselves in their religion. Do not be lenient in this matter.
If she does not correct herself, then separate from her, divorce her. It is not permissible for her to remain with you while she does not pray. Rather, either she repents, or you separate from her. And likewise, the daughters must be disciplined so that they turn to Allah, so that they correct themselves in prayer. Yes.
The presenter : May Allah reward you with good. And may He benefit you with your knowledge.
