The Ruling on Wealth Whose Origin Is Forbidden but Has Grown

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
He also asks and says: A man acquired a sum of one hundred Sudanese pounds through bribery, and this money grew through trade. Are the realized profits lawful, and if he repents, what should he do?
Answer: If he repents, it is sufficient for him, if Allah wills, to give out the hundred that he took through bribery, for repentance wipes out what came before it. If he gives all of it in charity and Allah makes him rich enough to do without it all, that is more cautious; because some of the scholars said: He should give all of it in charity or return the money to its owner. If he knows the owner of the bribe, he returns the money to him, the hundred pounds. But if he does not know him, he gives it in charity in the causes of righteousness, along with repentance to Allah and regret.
As for the profits that resulted from his work, selling, and buying, they are his money according to one of the two opinions of the scholars; because he grew it with his work and effort. So the money that came to him through the bribe is forbidden, but what he did with it through his effort, selling, and buying belongs to him; because it resulted from his work and his transactions.
Others said: It is the product of this impure wealth, so one should give it in charity or return it with the principal to its owner. This is the safest position for the believer and the furthest from evil, if he is able to do so. He should return the wealth to its owner with the principal if he knows him. If he returns the profit or takes it and says, "Forgive me for the profit" or "for part of it," that is good. However, if he does not know and has forgotten its owner and does not know who it is, he should give it in charity. It is recommended that he give the profit in charity as a precaution,

acting on the saying of those who said that it follows its principal. The believer should be cautious regarding his religion, especially if he has what suffices his needs; he should be cautious and stay away from earnings whose source is impure.
