The Ruling on Using Vessels Coated with Gold and Silver
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We return at the beginning of this episode to the letter of our sister listener (Maryam M. Z. J.) from Tabuk. Our sister in Allah, we addressed some of her questions in a previous episode, and she has one remaining question in this episode, in which she says: What is the ruling on copper vessels inlaid with silver, such as cups? Is their ruling the same as that of gold and silver, or not?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows: All vessels made of silver or gold, or inlaid with gold and silver, or gilded with them, are all prohibited and it is not permissible to use them. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 2067g His saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih Muslim 2067g encompasses those that are inlaid, those that are gilded, and those made entirely of gold and silver. Likewise, his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Ibn Majah 3413Sahih (Darussalam) narrated by Muslim in the Sahih. And in another wording, not in Muslim, with a sound chain in the Musnad of al-Daraqutni and others: This indicates the generality of the ruling and that it is not permissible to use vessels inlaid with gold and silver, or gilded with gold and silver, or made of gold and silver, a fortiori. This includes tea cups, coffee cups, and all spoons; they are all included in this. One thing is excepted from this, which is the clasp used to repair a cup. If a vessel breaks or splits, one may place only a clasp in it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did this, meaning: he binds it with a small amount of silver, and there is no harm in that. This is because it is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him): narrated by al-Bukhari in the Sahih from the hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). The scholars argued with this that a small clasp of silver, if the cup splits—if it cracks—binding it with that, there is no harm in that. However, making a vessel of gold and silver, or inlaying it with gold and silver for adornment and beauty, all of this is not permissible, even if it is in small vessels like cups and the like. Yes.
