The Ruling on Making Oneself a Servant to Other Than Allah in Names

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The listener Hasan 'Abd al-Nabi from Egypt, who works in al-Zulfi, says: People among us often name their children Hasan 'Abd al-Nabi and similar names. Is this naming forbidden or not? And is it obligatory for us to change them? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer: Yes, this naming is forbidden. It is not permissible to name someone 'Abd al-Rasul (Servant of the Messenger), nor 'Abd al-Nabi (Servant of the Prophet), nor 'Abd 'Umar, nor 'Abd al-Husayn, nor 'Abd al-Hasan, nor 'Abd 'Ali. All of this is reprehensible. Servitude is for Allah alone (Glorified and Exalted is He). Servitude is for Allah: 'Abd Allah, 'Abd al-Rahman, 'Abd al-Malik, 'Abd al-Qadus, 'Abd al-Karim. There is no harm in these.
Abu Muhammad Ibn Hazm (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The scholars have agreed on the prohibition of every name that implies servitude to other than Allah, except 'Abd al-Muttalib. Therefore, the conclusion is that making oneself a servant to other than Allah is forbidden by consensus. So one should not say 'Abd al-Nabi, nor 'Abd al-Husayn, nor 'Abd 'Ali, nor 'Abd 'Umar, or the like. Rather, one should use 'Abd Allah, 'Abd al-Rahman, 'Abd al-Karim, 'Abd al-Qadus, 'Abd al-Malik, 'Abd al-Salam, and similar names that denote servitude to the names of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). If this has occurred and a person has children named with these names: 'Abd al-Nabi, or 'Abd al-Husayn, or 'Abd al-Hasan, or 'Abd 'Umar, or similar, the names should be changed. They should be changed to names that are permissible in the Shari'ah. Instead of 'Abd al-Nabi, one should say 'Abd Rabb al-Nabi (Servant of the Lord of the Prophet), 'Abd al-Rasul, or 'Abd Rabb al-Rasul (Servant of the Lord of the Messenger) (peace and blessings be upon him). For 'Abd al-Husayn, one should say 'Abd Rabb al-Husayn, or 'Abd Allah, or 'Abd al-Rahman. Change them to what is permissible in the Shari'ah. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
