The Ruling on the Zakah of Jewelry and Its Amount

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
My mother left behind some jewelry after her passing, which was her property. I do not know its weight in grams, and we do not use it. Is zakah obligatory on this jewelry, and what is the amount of jewelry on which zakah becomes obligatory?

Answer:
As mentioned previously, zakah is obligatory on it if it reaches twenty mithqals of gold. A mithqal is equivalent to seventy-two medium-sized barley grains. It is known by those who know it, the goldsmiths, by weight; they know the mithqals. It should be noted that if the jewelry reaches the nisab—as mentioned previously—of twenty mithqals of gold, which is equivalent to eleven Saudi or European pounds and three-sevenths of a pound, the nisab is eleven pounds and three-sevenths of a pound in Saudi or European currency. In silver, it is equivalent to one hundred and forty mithqals, which is equivalent to fifty-six silver riyals of Saudi currency.
If the jewelry exceeds this amount, it is subject to zakah, and it is one-quarter of one-tenth according to its value in the markets. For example, if it is worth one thousand dollars, or one thousand Saudi riyals, or one thousand Iraqi or Jordanian dinars, or similar currencies in the lands of Islam, one-quarter of one-tenth is paid from it. From every one thousand, twenty-five is paid; this is one-quarter of one-tenth. The correct view is that zakah is due on jewelry, even if it is intended for use. This is the stronger of the opinions of the scholars. Yes.
