Ruling on Preferring the Wife over the Mother

Question:
We received a message from Morocco from al-Hashim Bulwa. He says in this question: What do you say, O Shaykh, about a person who prefers his wife over his mother? Is this permissible? We ask for guidance in this matter.

Answer:
This differs if he has fulfilled the rights of his mother in her usual clothing, food, and drink, but he gives his wife things that are suitable for her and for women of her status; in that case, there is no harm. The wife has clothing that is suitable for her, and the mother has clothing that is suitable for her. So if he gives each one what is suitable for her, there is no blame in that, even if what he gave the wife was more or higher in value, because that is what is suitable for her, and the woman who is his mother has something else that is suitable for her. So there is no blame in that. Each one is given what is suitable for her from the person. He gives the wife clothing and other things that are suitable for her, and he gives the mother clothing that is suitable for her.
