Question:
The Shaykh, may Allah preserve him, has a final question which says: If a person hates another person, does the other person sin if he reciprocates the hatred? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
This requires knowing the causes. If his hatred is because of the other’s display of sins, then he is rewarded and deserves to be boycotted. As for his hatred for other matters, this is not befitting; it is not befitting for worldly matters. One should strive to control his self until he loves him for the sake of Allah. The other person should likewise not treat him in kind, but should love him for the sake of Allah if he is obedient to Allah and upright. One should not love him as a follower of his own desires, but as a follower of the matters of the Shari'ah. So, if a person is upright, it is obligatory to love him for the sake of Allah, even if one finds in him something one dislikes regarding one’s own rights; because it is obligatory upon you to love him for the sake of Allah. And the other person loves you for the sake of Allah if you are upright.
As for worldly matters that occur among people, there is no harm in boycotting him for three days or less, if the matter becomes severe and requires this for three days or less. The boycott is only from this, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 63:255 Yes, meaning if there is a dispute between them regarding the rights of the created, or a fight, or something similar, then they may boycott each other for only three days.
But if it is for the sake of Allah, for a manifest sin, or for a religious innovation, then he is boycotted until he repents, even if it is for a month, two months, or more; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) boycotted Ka'b ibn Malik and his two companions for fifty nights; because of their disobedience in the matter of jihad, they lagged behind in the jihad without an excuse. Yes.
