The questioner : She recalls that she is a girl suffering from epilepsy, and she praises Allah the Exalted for what He has decreed for her. She says she has been suffering from this illness for ten years, and is now using treatment. This illness takes the form of convulsions, and she experiences fainting, then falls to the ground. She says, I find myself in the emergency room with my hair and face exposed in front of the doctors. So I said to my mother, why did you not cover my hair and face? She said: You are pulling it off! The question she asks is: Is there a sin on me for not covering myself in front of the doctors while I am in this state of illness?
The Shaykh : I say: I ask Allah the Exalted for her immediate healing, and that He reward her and give her reward for what befalls her of this affliction. She bears no blame and there is no harm if she exposes her face during the epilepsy, because she exposes it without intention or will. Likewise, if the doctors need to expose her face for examination and treatment, there is no harm in this. However, it is necessary that a mahram (a relative one may not marry) be with her, so that the doctor does not remain alone with her, or that another man or a nurse or the like be present with the doctor.
The important point is that it is not permissible for the doctors to have one of them remain alone with a woman without a mahram.
