Treatment of Epilepsy

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 6811 )
Q: We have a neighbor in our residence whose wife has been afflicted with epilepsy. Her husband took her to more than one female and male doctor for treatment, but Allah did not will her cure. Some of the common people among the ignorant Muslims advised him to take her
to the church, claiming that there is a devil inside her and that a priest must exorcise it. We ask for guidance to advise this man not to do that, and to clarify the ruling if he goes to the church. May Allah guide us and you to what He loves and is pleased with.

A: The guardian of this sick woman must continue to take her to specialists in this disease in the hospital or similar places for her treatment, for the treatment may be prolonged depending on the severity and intensity of the illness, and he should not rush matters. He must also treat her with the Shari'ah ruqyah by reciting verses and surahs from the Qur'an over her, such as reciting: Surat al-Fatihah, and (Say: He is Allah, the One), and the two Mu'awwidhat (Surat al-Falaq and Surat al-Nas), and reciting Ayat al-Kursi when she lies down in her bed to sleep. She should remember Allah the Exalted in the morning and say: (In the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing can cause harm on earth or in the sky, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing) three times, and she should say that in the evening three times as well. She should seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah and say: (I seek refuge for myself in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created). Some of her mahram relatives or her husband should perform ruqyah on her with that... and so on from the dhikr established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). You will find that in the book (Al-Kalim al-Tayyib) by Ibn Taymiyyah, the book (Al-Wabil al-Sayyib) by Ibn al-Qayyim, the book (Al-Adhkar) by al-Nawawi, and the book (Zad al-Ma'ad) by Ibn al-Qayyim . They should beware of going to the church or the priest to exorcise what they call the devil, for it is the place of worship of the Christians, and the priest is a disbeliever. His ruqyah for her is only with shirk-based ruqyah and satanic amulets, and this is from fortune-telling and shirk. Let the Muslim beware of that misguidance. There is sufficiency in treatment by doctors and in the Shari'ah ruqyah with the Qur'an and the Prophetic Sunnah, making the shirk-based satanic ruqyah unnecessary. We ask Allah for her healing, and that He protect us and you from trials, for Allah, the Sublime, is the One who answers supplication. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
