The ruling on hanging pictures of living beings and the harm that comes to the deceased from doing so

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We return at the beginning of this episode to the letter from our sister listener, Najma Abdullah Muhammad, from Iraq, Nineveh Governorate, Al-Aamir neighborhood. We presented some of our sister Najma’s questions in previous episodes, and in this episode she asks and says: Does a picture of a deceased person, when placed in a frame and hung on the wall, harm the deceased? Does he incur sin? And is this forbidden for the one who does it, or not?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows: Hanging pictures is not permissible, neither in offices nor in gathering places nor elsewhere. I mean: pictures of living beings, such as a picture of a man, a lion, a wolf, a cat, or anything else; none of these are permissible. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Ali:
Spare no portrait unwiped outلا تدع صورة إلا طمستها
Riyad as-Salihin 1687
, and he (peace and blessings be upon him), when he saw a curtain with pictures in it at Aisha’s, tore it and said:
The makers of these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them: 'Bring to life that which you have created.'إن أصحاب هذه الصور يعذبون يوم القيامة، ويقال لهم: أحيوا ما خلقتم
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5362Sahih (Darussalam)
. Therefore, it is not permissible for a Muslim man to hang a picture, nor for a Muslim woman to hang a picture in her husband’s house or her own house, or in an office or gathering place or the like.
As for the deceased, that does not harm him if he did not order this and did not approve of it. Rather, it harms the one who hung it. The sin is on the one who hung it. As for the deceased who did not approve of this and did not order it, nothing of that is upon him. This is because Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, says:
and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of anotherوَلا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَى
[Al-An'am: 164]. But it is the one who hung it who sins by doing so. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
