Is a woman's voice an 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered)?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : We often hear, O Shaykh, that a woman's voice is an 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered); what is the validity of this statement?

The Shaykh : There is no basis for this statement. A woman's voice in relation to a man is like a man's voice in relation to a woman, and there is no difference. However, by "voice" we mean the voice with which Allah created her. If she softens her voice and coos in her speech, then it becomes forbidden (haram); not because the voice is an 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered), but because of what is associated with it, which usually tempts men. Is the answer understood?

The questioner : May Allah reward you.
