The Ruling on the Invalidity of Ablution Due to Sleep

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the ruling for women who fall into a deep sleep in the mosque and begin prayer without renewing their ablution?

Answer:
If a person sleeps a deep sleep, his ablution becomes invalid, whether he is a man or a woman. His prayer is not valid without ablution, and his circumambulation is not valid without ablution. This is based on the statement of Safwan ibn 'Asal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) taught them that when they were traveling, they should not remove their leather socks for three days except in the case of major ritual impurity, but if they urinate, defecate, or sleep.
He equated sleep with urination and defecation. So if one is overcome by sleep, he must perform ablution. However, if it is a light sleep, it does not invalidate the ablution, such as dozing off while being aware of those around him.
