Question:
Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) perform the qunut in the Fajr prayer in the last rak'ah after the ruku', raising his hands and supplicating:
Allahumma ihdini fiman hadaytaاللهم اهدني فيمن هديت
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1745Sahih (Darussalam)
every night until he departed this world?

Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not persistently perform the qunut in the Fajr prayer, neither with the famous supplication "O Allah, guide us among those You have guided..." nor with any other. Rather, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform the qunut in times of calamity; that is, when a calamity befell the Muslims from the enemies of Islam, he would perform it for a specific period, supplicating against them and for the Muslims. This is how it was reported from the Prophet Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
It is established from the hadith of Sa'd ibn Tariq al-Ash'aji that he said to his father: "O my father, you have prayed behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and behind Abu Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthman, and 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with them). Did they perform the qunut in the Fajr prayer?" He said: "O my son, you are asking about something new." It was narrated by Imam Ahmad, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, and a group of scholars with a sound chain of narration.
As for the report from the hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform the qunut in the Fajr prayer until he departed this world, it is a weak hadith according to the scholars of hadith.
