The ruling on the follower forgetting to recite al-Fatihah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
If the iqamah is called and, during the prayer, I forget to recite al-Fatihah in one or two rak'ahs while I am a follower, is my prayer valid or not? Is it obligatory for me to recite the opening of the Book, or not? And what is the procedure I should follow in this situation?

Answer:
If the follower forgets to recite al-Fatihah, or is unaware of its obligation upon him, or catches up with the imam while he is bowing, then in these cases his rak'ah is sufficient, his prayer is valid, and he is not required to make up the rak'ah because he is excused by ignorance, forgetfulness, and not catching up with the standing. This is the opinion of the majority of scholars, based on what al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih from Abu Bakrah al-Thaqafi that he caught up with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in some of the prayers while he was bowing, so he bowed without entering the row, then he entered the row. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
May Allah increase your eagerness! But do not do it again.زادك الله حرصًا ولا تعد
Sunan Abi Dawud 683Sahih (Al-Albani)
. He did not order him to make up the rak'ah; rather, he forbade him from returning to bowing outside the row. And success is from Allah.
