The first question of Fatwa number ( 10314 )
Q1: If a person, for example, omits the recitation of al-Fatihah in the midday prayer due to forgetfulness and not intentionally, is his prayer valid or not? Please issue a ruling, may Allah bless you and reward you with all good?
A1: Reciting al-Fatihah is a pillar of the prayer for the imam and the one praying alone, and it is obligatory for the follower if he is able. If one omits it out of forgetfulness in one of the units, the unit following it is considered to have taken its place, and he must perform a unit to complete his prayer if he is an imam or praying alone, then prostrate for forgetfulness after the tashahhud and before the taslim. As for the follower, he owes nothing if he omits it out of forgetfulness or ignorance, and likewise if he joins the prayer while the imam is bowing, he bows with him and it is dropped from him; due to the hadith of Abu Bakrah al-Thaqafi regarding this. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
