The Ruling on Forgetting the Recitation of al-Fatihah in Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
If a person forgets to recite al-Fatihah during the prayer, or misses some of the supplications, what is the ruling on his prayer?

Answer:
If he forgets al-Fatihah, he must repeat the prayer. Al-Fatihah is a pillar of the prayer. If he is the imam or praying alone and does not recite al-Fatihah, his prayer is not valid. If he forgets in the first rak'ah, the second rak'ah takes its place, and so on. He performs a rak'ah in place of the one in which he forgot al-Fatihah. They should alert him if he forgets.
As for the ma'mum, if he leaves it out due to forgetfulness, we hope that it suffices for him, because a group of scholars—and they are the majority—hold that the imam's recitation suffices for him. However, he must not intentionally leave it out. It is obligatory for him to recite al-Fatihah, and he must not do so intentionally. But if he forgets, or follows those who hold that it is dropped for the ma'mum, or believes that it is dropped for the ma'mum, his prayer is valid. As for the imam and the one praying alone, they have no doubt about it, and it is obligatory for them to recite it. If he forgets in a rak'ah, the other takes its place, and he performs a rak'ah other than that one.

Question: Does he prostrate for forgetfulness?

Answer: He prostrates for forgetfulness, yes.
