Question:
The brother Y. A. from Hyderabad in Pakistan says in his question: I read a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim, and in al-Muwatta of Imam Malik ibn Anas (may Allah have mercy on him), which states: From Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Whoever catches a Rak'ah of the Salat then he has caught the Salat."من أدرك من الصلاة ركعة فقد أدرك الصلاة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 524Sahih (Darussalam)
I ask you to kindly clarify the confusion I have.

Answer:
The meaning of the aforementioned hadith is that: whoever catches one rak'ah with the imam has caught the virtue of the congregational prayer, and he must make up what he missed. Authentic hadiths have come from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) indicating that whoever misses something of the prayer must make it up after the imam’s taslim. Among them is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
When you come to the prayer, walk calmly and with composure, and whatever you catch, pray, and whatever you miss, complete itإذا جئتم إلى الصلاة فامشوا وعليكم السكينة والوقار، فما أدركتم فصلوا وما فاتكم فأتموا
, and among them is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever is in time for a Rak'ah of the Friday prayer, or any other prayer, should add another (Rak'ah) to it and his prayer will then be complete.من أدرك ركعة من الجمعة فليضف إليها أخرى وقد تمت صلاته
Bulugh al-Maram 2:366
And success is from Allah.
