Ruling on making up missed prayers for one who abandoned them out of negligence

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
I did not pray during some of my younger years, then I would return to prayer and then stop again. Now, praise be to Allah, I have become consistent in performing the prayer. Do I have to make up the prayers I missed, such that I pray every time that passed with its time, or what should I do? The same applies to fasting; is it sufficient for me to fast the voluntary fasts? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
If the situation is as you described in the question, then you do not have to make up the prayers and fasts you left off; because abandoning the prayer is disbelief, which invalidates the deed. And Allah the Exalted said:
Say to those who have disbelieved [that] if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for themقُلْ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِنْ يَنْتَهُوا يُغْفَرْ لَهُمْ مَا قَدْ سَلَفَ
[Al-Anfal: 38], and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the one who embraced Islam:
You accepted Islam with all the previous virtues that you practised.أسلمت على ما أسلفت من خير
Sahih Muslim 123a
; and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Repentance wipes out what came before itالتوبة تجب ما قبلها
, and because he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not order those who embraced Islam on the Day of the Conquest to make up what they had left of fasting and prayer. And success is from Allah.
