Ruling on making up missed prayers and fasts for those who abandoned them

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
From the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Khirbat al-Suq. This message was received by the program from one of our sisters. The sender (M. S. A.) says, our sister says in her question: I used to break my fast constantly during Ramadan. When Allah guided me and I felt faith, I did not return to that. Am I held accountable for all the fasts I broke before my guidance and repentance to Allah? Or is it obligatory for me to make up all the fasts I missed? Knowing that I cannot count how many I missed, what do you advise me to do? Also, I did not pray before, but praise be to Allah, I am now consistent with it and committed to it. I ask you to clarify. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
It is obligatory for you to repent, and Allah has granted you that, praise be to Allah. So you must adhere to repentance, and increase in seeking forgiveness, good deeds, voluntary prayers, and charity if you are able. Increase in glorifying Allah, saying Allahu Akbar, praising Allah, and seeking forgiveness. All of this is among the causes of the perfection of repentance and the causes of forgiveness. You do not have to make up the prayers or the fasts; because abandoning prayer is disbelief, and a disbeliever who embraces Islam does not have to make up [missed acts]. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith:
The covenant that distinguishes between us and them is prayer; so whoever leaves it, he has committed Kufr.العهد الذي بيننا وبينهم الصلاة؛ فمن تركها فقد كفر
Sunan Ibn Majah 1079Sahih (Darussalam)
, narrated by Imam Ahmad and the people of the Sunan with a sound chain from Buraydah ibn al-Husayb (may Allah be pleased with him). And he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:
Between a man and disbelief and shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the abandonment of prayer.بين الرجل وبين الكفر والشرك ترك الصلاة
, narrated by Imam Muslim in his Sahih from Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both). In other hadiths indicating that abandoning prayer is disbelief.
'Abdullah ibn Shuqayq al-'Uqayli, the noble Tabi'i, mentioned that the Companions -the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)- held that abandoning the prayer is disbelief, and he said:
The Companions of Muhammad (ﷺ) didn't consider leaving anything to be disblief except for the Salat.كانوا لا يرون شيئًا من الأعمال تركه كفر إلا الصلاة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2622Sahih (Darussalam)
, so the prayer is a matter of great importance and it is the pillar of Islam; whoever guards it has guarded his religion, and whoever neglects it has neglected his religion.
So you, since Allah has granted you repentance from abandoning prayer and abandoning fasting; you do not have to make up [missed acts], praise be to Allah. Rather, you must have sincere repentance and steadfastness upon it, and praise Allah for that and thank Him for that, and increase in good deeds: charity - even if it is little - much seeking of forgiveness, glorifying Allah, saying Allahu Akbar, praising Allah, and other forms of good: such as voluntary fasting, and much supplication and humility to Allah that He may accept from you and forgive you.
As for the one who abandoned fasting, but he prays, a Muslim who prays but was lax in fasting; then he must make up, he must make up the fasting that is upon him; because abandoning fasting is not apostasy from Islam, but it is a great sin. So whoever abandoned fasting for a month or more or less; then he must make it up; as long as he is a Muslim who prays, and he does not have with him what necessitates his apostasy and disbelief. Then he must make it up; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered menstruating women to make up the fast, so they must make it up. And likewise the one who intentionally abandoned fasting without an excuse, but she prays; then she must make it up as well. And likewise the man who was lax in fasting and he is a Muslim who prays; then he must make it up as well and estimate the days he left if he does not know them, he estimates, and acts according to his estimate in that and makes it up. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
