Ruling on Shaving the Beard, Lengthening the Garment, and Arrogance Toward Others

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This letter contains some questions sent by 'Abd al-Wahhab ibn 'Umar al-Murayhi. He says in his letter: What is the ruling on shaving the beard, lengthening the garment, and arrogance toward other Muslims?
Answer: Shaving the beard is forbidden, an abomination, and contrary to the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his commands. It is authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he prohibited it, saying:
Cut your mustaches short and let your beards grow, and be distinct from the polytheists.
, and he said:
Trim closely the moustache, and grow beard, and thus act against the fire-worshippers.
Sahih Muslim 260
. This is how it came from him (peace and blessings be upon him) in the two Sahihs from the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded letting the beard grow and trimming the mustache, saying:
Cut short the moustaches and let the beards grow, and differ from the polytheists.
. And in Sahih Muslim, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) , from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said:
Trim closely the moustache, and grow beard, and thus act against the fire-worshippers.
Sahih Muslim 260
. So, my brother, you are commanded to follow your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), obey him, and proceed according to his methodology, as He (Mighty and Majestic) said:
And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain fromوَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُوا
[Al-Hashr: 7], and He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said:
He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah
[An-Nisa: 80], and He said:
obey Allah and obey the Messengerأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ
[An-Nisa: 59], and He said:
And establish prayer and give zakah and obey the Messenger - that you may receive mercy.
[An-Nur: 56]. So all good is in obeying him, because obeying him is obeying Allah . And in Sahih al-Bukhari, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said:
All my followers will enter Paradise except those who refuse." They said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Who will refuse?" He said, "Whoever obeys me will enter Paradise, and whoever disobeys me is the one who refuses (to enter it)."كل أمتي يدخلون الجنة إلا من أبى، قيل: يا رسول الله! ومن يأبى؟ قال: من أطاعني دخل الجنة، ومن عصاني فقد أبى
Sahih al-Bukhari 7280
.
Likewise, arrogance toward people and belittling them is among the major sins. So it is obligatory to be humble before Allah and to beware of arrogance. It is authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he was asked, and a man said to him:
O Messenger of Allah! Should a man's garment be good and his sandal be good? Is that arrogance? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, indeed Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. Arrogance is rejecting the truth and belittling people.
. He (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that having good clothes, good sandals, and a cloak or the like is not arrogance.
Verily, Allah is Graceful and He loves Grace
Sahih Muslim 91a
. So beauty is good and beloved to Allah . And He said in His Noble Book:
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid
[Al-A'raf: 31]. Then he clarified that arrogance is rejecting the truth and belittling people. So arrogance is rejecting the truth, meaning: rejecting and discarding the truth when it contradicts one's desire. And the meaning of belittling people is: looking down on people. This arrogance is looking down on people, belittling them, being arrogant toward them, and rejecting the truth when it contradicts one's desire. This is arrogance.
As for isbal (letting the garment hang below the ankles), it is forbidden. Dragging the clothes, whether the lower garment, trousers, or a cloak, is all forbidden; because of the arrogance and vanity in it, and also because of the ruining of the clothes and making them impure and dirty, and also because of imitating women, for it is prescribed for women to let their clothes hang over their feet. So the one who lets his garment hang has imitated women and contradicted the command of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) where he prohibited isbal. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Beware of isbal; for it is of vanity.
. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:
but what comes lower than the ankles is in Hellما أسفل من الكعبين فهو في النار
Sunan Abi Dawud 4093Sahih (Al-Albani)
, narrated by al-Bukhari in the Sahih. And this is general, whether one intended arrogance or not. This is general if one did it intentionally. As for if it overtook him and it hung down, he raised it and it hung down a little and he checks it, this does not fall under that. In the story of al-Siddiq when he said:
O Messenger of Allah! My garment becomes loose. He said: I am not one who does that out of vanity.
, meaning: I am not one who intentionally lets the garment hang down out of arrogance and grandeur. And it does not mean restriction, but rather its meaning is that the habit of one who drags the garments is arrogance, unlike the one who checks his garment and takes care of it when it becomes loose. So this one did not intend arrogance and is not among those threatened with this threat. For this reason, the hadiths came general in prohibiting isbal without restriction, and the restriction came in other hadiths. So the restriction does not indicate a restriction of the other hadiths, but it is from the category of mentioning instances of the general. His saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever arrogantly drags his garment, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Judgement.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1731Sahih (Darussalam)
, this implies a severe threat for one who intended vanity, along with the generality of the hadiths indicating the prohibition of isbal absolutely, such as his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whatever of the Izar comes below the ankles is in the Fire.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5331Sahih (Darussalam)
. This is general, and because it is usually accompanied by arrogance, this is the usual case, along with what is in it of negligence, imitating women, dirtying the clothes, and exposing them to impurity. And from this is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) in the hadith of Abu Dharr in Muslim:
Three whom Allah will not speak to, nor look at, nor purify, and for them is a painful punishment: the one who lets his garment hang, the one who is stingy in what he gives, and the one who certifies his goods with a false oath.
. This is a severe threat in what Muslim narrated in the Sahih, not restricted to arrogance, so it is general. And whoever says: (It is forbidden with arrogance, and disliked without it) has gone astray... he contradicted the evidence in an apparent way. But whoever drags it with the intention of vanity, his sin becomes greater and his punishment becomes harsher. And whoever drags it negligently and intentionally, he has done an abomination, imitated women, and contradicted the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and he is exposed to the threat:
Whatever of the Izar comes below the ankles is in the Fire.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5331Sahih (Darussalam)
. And the threat in the latter is:
Three [people] to whom Allah will not speak, nor will He look at them, nor will He purify them, and for them is a painful punishment: the one who lets his garment hang below the ankles, the one who is stingy with what he gives, and the one who swears falsely to sell his goods.
. So it is obligatory for Muslims to beware of this characteristic and this vile trait, and to raise the clothes above the ankles and not let them go below the ankles. For the garment of the believer is from the middle of the leg to the ankle, and it is not permissible for the garment, meaning whether it is a lower garment or a shirt, to go below the ankle. And it should not be above the middle of the leg; because if it is above the middle of the leg, it may be exposed to the appearance of the 'awrah, and the 'awrah is from the navel to the knee. But if it rises above the middle of the leg, the 'awrah may be exposed. So it is better to let it go from the knee to the middle of the leg, but between the middle of the leg and the ankle, this is the place of the lawful garment, and this is the place of the ends of the clothes from the middle of the leg to the ankle, and it is not permissible to go below the ankle. We ask Allah for success for everyone. Yes.
