Ruling on Reciting Only al-Fatihah in the Obligatory Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The question: Also, Muhammad 'Abd al-Sa'id al-Yamani asks: What is the ruling for one who prays the obligatory prayer and recites only al-Fatihah, without reciting any other verses?
The answer: al-Fatihah is a pillar of the prayer. If one recites al-Fatihah during the prayer, the prayer is sufficient and valid. However, his action is disliked (makruh) because he has contradicted the Sunnah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite a surah or verses along with it in the first and second rak'ahs of the Dhuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, 'Isha, and Fajr prayers. Therefore, one who leaves out reciting a surah with al-Fatihah in the Fajr, Jumu'ah, Dhuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, and 'Isha prayers in the first and second rak'ahs has contradicted the Sunnah. The least of his states is that he has left what is most important (the first of the recommended practices). There is no objection to saying that he has done a disliked (makruh) act, because he has left a Sunnah that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was consistent in performing. Thus, he has done a disliked (makruh) act that he should not do. Yes.
