The ruling on submitting to removing the hijab in order to continue one's studies

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a message—may Allah prolong your life—that reached us from Iraq, from Baghdad, sent by the two sisters (A. A. K.) and (F. A. K.), who are students in the secondary stage of education. They say: We are on the verge of university. We wear the Islamic hijab and we perform the obligatory acts of worship, such as prayer, fasting, and reading the Qur'an, and we wish good for all people. The school principal has asked us to remove the Islamic hijab and to wear the ordinary uniform, which is revealing and does not cover a woman's femininity, and which displays evil and follows the dangerous Western models that have swept through our country today. However, we have decided not to submit to her demands and to discontinue our studies entirely. What is your opinion? Please inform us. May Allah reward you with good, and may you have more goodness and success. And our question is: Could discontinuing the pursuit of knowledge lead to committing sins when we leave our studies? And thank you.
Answer: First, I thank the two student sisters for their Islamic zeal and their concern for the safety of their religion and their honor. I ask Allah to grant them more guidance, and I ask Him to grant the principal guidance and success so that she may be a helper to the students in good, not in evil. I ask Allah to guide the principals of girls' schools to success and guidance. We ask Allah to grant them success and guidance and that they may be helpers to the students in all good.
As for my advice to the two students, it is to discontinue their studies if they can only be obtained by wearing the bad, revealing clothes that the principal calls for, and that every person who is lax in religion and every person who is weak in zeal and careless in matters of religion calls for. Their discontinuing their studies is better than their wearing what is not appropriate in the Shari'ah and what the Shari'ah does not permit. There is no doubt that the hijab is a necessary and obligatory matter for the woman; because Allah the Exalted says in His great Book:
And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partitionوَإِذَا سَأَلْتُمُوهُنَّ مَتَاعًا فَاسْأَلُوهُنَّ مِنْ وَرَاءِ حِجَابٍ
[Al-Ahzab: 53] Then He said after that:
That is purer for your hearts and their heartsذَلِكُمْ أَطْهَرُ لِقُلُوبِكُمْ وَقُلُوبِهِنَّ
[Al-Ahzab: 53], so the Exalted and Exalted is He made clear that the hijab is purer for the hearts of men and the hearts of women all together. So the one who calls for the hijab calls for purity, and calls for modesty and distance from the causes of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation). As for the one who calls for removing the hijab, she calls for corruption, impurity, indecency, and distance from purity and closeness to impurity and corruption. And these two are not equal. So the callers to removing the hijab are callers to casting away virtue... callers to corruption... callers to impurity and filth... callers to fighting the purity to which Allah the Exalted and Exalted is He called. So my advice is that they not respond to the principal's request, and that they remain with the hijab. If it is possible to complete the studies with that, then praise be to Allah. Otherwise, if it is only possible by removing the hijab, then there is no need to complete the studies in this university. And it is possible, if it becomes easy, that studies become easy in another place, or that they be content with what they have obtained of studies, and then with reading and studying between themselves and between them and their like of the good, pure women. For gathering for studies and studying in books of knowledge benefits greatly and is of great benefit, especially for the one who has obtained the foundation and studied the principles, for she benefits from reading and studying with much good. And it is not permissible for her to respond to what Allah the Exalted and Exalted is He has forbidden. Yes.
