Ruling on Wearing Knee-Length Socks in Ihram

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a message we received from Riyadh, from Al-Ulaya, sent by the listener Abdul Aziz ibn Mani' al-Ruwaisi. He says: Your Eminence, Shaykh Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz, peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings. And after that:
I performed Hajj this past year and I wore knee-length socks while in the state of ihram. These socks are below the knee, they are made of canvas, and they have stitching. Have I committed a prohibited act in my ihram? May Allah guide you to success?
Answer: There is no harm in wearing knee-length socks below the knees; because they are of the same kind as sandals in the most correct opinion of the scholars; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the one who did not find sandals:
He wears the leather socks and cuts them below the anklesيلبس الخفين ويقطعهما أسفل من الكعبين
Sunan ad-Darimi 5:16
This indicates that the cut-off parts are of the same kind as sandals, and many scholars have validated the permissibility of wearing leather socks without cutting them when sandals are not available.
So the conclusion is: the cut-off part and the thing made below the knee, there is nothing wrong with it... if he has knee-length socks below the knees, not... above the knees, then their ruling is the ruling of sandals, and there is no harm in that. Yes.
The presenter: Meaning: they are equal to sandals?
The Shaykh: Yes, like sandals. Yes.
The presenter: Okay, and regarding the stitching in them?
The Shaykh: It does not harm, even sandals have stitching. Yes, even if he wears a stitched lower garment or a stitched upper garment, if his lower garment is made of three or four pieces stitched together, it is permissible, or if his upper garment is like that, made of two or three pieces stitched together, there is nothing wrong with it. What is forbidden is wearing stitched clothing that fits the body, like a shirt, or fits half the body, like a T-shirt, or trousers, without an excuse. As for the upper garment being pieced together from stitched pieces, or the lower garment being pieced together from pieces, this does not harm. Yes.
The presenter: Okay, the jurists, Your Eminence, say for example: wearing stitched clothing is among the prohibited things in ihram... in it.
The Shaykh: This stitched clothing means the encircling one, meaning, encircling the whole body, or half of it, or a limb of it, this is what is intended. As for the pieced-together stitched one, meaning a piece pieced together, yes, this is not included in their intention. But their intention is: the stitched clothing that fits the body, like a shirt, or fits a limb of it, like gloves... like leather socks, or fits the upper half, like: a T-shirt and its like, or the lower half, like trousers and their like. Yes.
