Q73: The listener A.A. from Dammam says in his question: When do amulets contradict the foundation of tawhid (the oneness of Allah)? And when do they contradict its perfection?
A73: Amulets are the writings, incantations, charms, and barriers hung on children and others, which are called by names used to ward off the evil eye, envy, and other such things. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan al-Bayhaqi 17:557 And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan Abi Dawud 3883Sahih (Al-Albani) These are the amulets, and they are prohibited because of the heart’s attachment to other than Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and because one
may believe that they are what repel harm and bring good, in which case this is major shirk (associating partners with Allah) with Allah (Mighty and Majestic); for it is Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) alone who repels harm and brings good. Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned against them. It becomes minor shirk if one believes that Allah is the one who repels harm and brings good, but that these amulets are a cause for repelling harm or bringing good. In this case, it is minor shirk because these are not a prescribed cause for repelling harm or bringing good; rather, they are prohibited.
