The extent of the validity of the claim that the deceased hears the words of the people who buried him

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz! We received a letter from Fathi Muhammad Mu'min from the Arab Republic of Egypt. He says in his letter: I heard from some scholars that when the deceased is brought to the grave to be buried, he hears everything that the people who came to bury him say. Is this true or not?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows:
Matters of the barzakh (the interval between death and resurrection) and matters concerning the dead are among the great, unseen matters that only Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) knows. What people say on this subject is not to be relied upon. What is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is that he said:
he hears the stepping sound of their shoesإنه ليسمع قرع نعالهم
Sunan Abi Dawud 3231Sahih (Al-Albani)
meaning: after they have departed and after the burial. This is the preserved report. As for hearing what people say and discuss, we are not aware of anything being reported on this, and it is not permissible to be certain of this without evidence. He (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned that he hears the striking of their sandals when they depart from his burial. Therefore, it is not permissible for a believer or anyone else to be certain of anything regarding the dead without evidence. Yes.
