The Ruling on a Woman Delivering a Lecture to Men and Recording the Lecture

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
So we move on to the message from our brother Haidar Abdullah Abu Diyab from Sudan. Our brother asks: Is it permissible for a woman to deliver a sermon to a gathering of people that includes men and women, using microphones in the name of religion, and to record that seminar, as they call it, on video films, and distribute them inside and outside the country, all in the name of religion? And is there a principle in Islam called: "The end justifies the means"?
Answer: There is no harm in this sermon, for a woman to preach to people and remind them, even if there are men present. There is no objection to that with a normal voice, not with submission in the voice or with another ugly voice, as He the Exalted and Majestic said:
O wives of the Prophet, you are not like anyone among women. If you fear Allah, then do not be soft in speech [to men], lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate speech.
[Al-Ahzab: 32].
So if the sermon is known speech that contains nothing considered submission in the speech, and the intention is advice, then the female Companions and others besides the female Companions advised men and advised women. And Allah the Exalted says:
The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrongوَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ
[At-Tawbah: 71], and He the Exalted says:
And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah and does righteousnessوَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ قَوْلًا مِمَّنْ دَعَا إِلَى اللَّهِ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا
[Fussilat: 33], and this encompasses both men and women. So if she preaches, reminds, and calls to Allah, there is nothing wrong with that, on the condition of modesty and avoiding seclusion with any man other than her mahrams, and with hijab. All of this is fine.
As for the recording, that is what is disapproved. She should not be recorded unless she is covered and wearing hijab over her face and everything; this does not harm her recording. But the type of recording should not be done in these matters; rather, it should be recorded by audio only, without an image. Because the image is originally forbidden and haram, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
the most grievously tormented people on the Day of Resurrection would be the painters of picturesأشد الناس عذاباً يوم القيامة المصورون
Sahih Muslim 2109a
So there is no need for the image, and no need to record her, but the speech is recorded. The sermon and the exhortation are recorded, and Allah benefits with it whom He wills, without the need for the image. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
The Shaykh: Yes.
