Question:
The listener (A. A. Z.) from al-Muzaymiyah sent a question asking about the interpretation of the saying of the Truth, (Blessed and Exalted is He):
And their prayer at the House was not except whistling and handclappingوَمَا كَانَ صَلاتُهُمْ عِنْدَ الْبَيْتِ إِلَّا مُكَاءً وَتَصْدِيَةً
[Al-Anfal: 35].

Answer:
This is the prayer of the people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, the disbelievers of Quraysh and those with them, at the House: clamor and clapping. Clamor is whistling, and clapping is the striking of the hands. It was their custom to clap their hands and whistle; so the Muslims were prohibited from doing the like of their action. It is not permissible for a Muslim to engage in whistling and clapping in his acts of worship, nor at the Sacred Mosque, nor in his other works. Rather, clapping is for women, and the man speaks. If something befalls him, he glorifies Allah in prayer: Subhan Allah, Subhan Allah. It is not permissible for him to use whistling; he uses the speech he needs, instead of whistling. Yes.
