Question:
The questioner from Libya says: She mentions that she is a religious girl, and she praises Allah for that. The questioner says: If a person recites over himself, for example, if he recites the Qur'an while he is suffering from the illness of envy, does it benefit him, or is it necessary for a person, or a shaykh, to recite over him? Please give us a ruling, and may Allah reward you.
Answer:
If a person recites over himself, it benefits him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite over himself (peace and blessings be upon him). So when a believer feels an illness, or distress, or unease, he should recite the Qur'an, increase in reciting the Qur'an, and ask his Lord for well-being and healing. He has great good in doing so, and he has a model in the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Allah the Exalted says: [Al-Ahzab: 21]. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: كان النبي ﷺ إذا اشتكى؛ جمع كفيه، فقرأ فيهما عند النوم: قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ [الإخلاص:1] والمعوذتين ثلاث مرات، يمسح في كل مرة على ما استطاع من جسده، ويبدأ برأسه ووجهه وصدره -عليه الصلاة والسلام- في كل مرة When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) felt unwell, he would cup his hands and recite into them at the time of sleep: "Say: He is Allah, the One" [Al-Ikhlas: 1] and the two protective surahs, three times. He would wipe with them over whatever he could of his body, starting with his head, face, and chest (peace and blessings be upon him), in every instance. This is how Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported it.
She said: (may Allah be pleased with her).
The point is: The believing man and woman should recite the Qur'an and increase in doing so. For the reciter, there is a good deed for every letter. The reciter of the Qur'an has a good deed for every letter, and a good deed is multiplied tenfold.
So the advice to all my Muslim brothers and sisters, men and women, is to increase in reciting the Qur'an by night and day. Whether you are sitting on your bed, or in your sitting place, or in any place, or walking on the road, you recite between yourself and yourself. And when you feel an illness, you recite in your hands what Allah has made easy of the Qur'an. Among the most important of that is Surah [Al-Ikhlas: 1] and the two protective surahs. You recite them in your hands three times, and it is better at the time of sleep. Then you wipe with your hands over whatever is easy of your body, starting with your head, or your face and chest, three times; following the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And you supplicate to your Lord that Allah grants you healing and well-being. Yes.
