Question:
Finally, he asks and says: I hope you can provide a comprehensive explanation of lost property and its types, particularly lost sheep?
Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: So camels are not to be picked up, and likewise what is in their category, such as cows and their like, which are safe from small predators.
As for sheep, they are to be picked up. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Ibn Majah 2504Sahih (Darussalam) So he takes it and does not leave it, and he announces it, meaning he calls out about it, saying: Who owns this sheep? Who owns this goat? Who owns this male goat? I found it in such and such a place, on such and such a day. If he finds someone who recognizes it, he hands it over to him. He must announce it for a full year, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih Muslim 1725 So it is necessary to announce the goat and its like, such as a calf that is not safe from predators, and its like that is not safe from small animals.
Likewise, lost wealth such as gold, silver, vessels, and clothing is announced by saying: Who owns such and such? But he does not specify the characteristics. If the owner comes and identifies the characteristics, he hands it over to him, or if he presents proof, he hands it over to him. He must announce it for a full year, because the Messenger (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Meaning: He calls out about it for a year in the gathering places of people, two, three, or four times a month: Who owns this lost item? Who owns this goat? Who owns such and such? If he finds someone who recognizes it, he gives it to him. Then he has the choice regarding the goat: if he wishes, he slaughters it and determines its value with the knowledge of experts, preserves the value, and writes it down, and writes down its marks and characteristics, the characteristics of the goat, or the sheep, or the lamb, recording the characteristics. If he wishes, he sells it and preserves the price. If he wishes, he keeps it with his sheep if there is no hardship, letting it graze with his sheep until its owner finds it.
Likewise, vessels and their like are preserved until their owner finds them, along with announcing and identifying them. Yes.
