How should one act if he has a debt owed by a person whose location and address he does not know?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This is a question from one of the female listeners who says: I have a problem, which is that one day Satan deceived me, causing me to deceive the shopkeeper when I took what I needed from him and told him, "I will give you the price later." A year or more has passed and I am still in this state. When I wanted to pay him, the place had suddenly changed and became a different market, and the owner of this debt that is on my conscience could not be found. My question is: although I am very sorry, I have not found him, and I do not know anyone who knows him so that I can give him the amount. I asked more than one person and they said, "He is not there." What should I do?

Answer:
You must first repent to Allah. You must repent, feel remorse, and make a sincere resolve not to return to such a thing; because you have wronged him and transgressed against him. You must give charity with this... give this money in charity to the poor with the intention on behalf of its owner, if you are unable to find his address and deliver the money to him. If you are unable to do so, then you must give it in charity to the poor with the intention on behalf of its owner, and make du'a' for him. This is sufficient—praise be to Allah—along with repentance and remorse for what you did. Yes.
