The Necessity of Raising Young Girls with Modesty in Clothing and Other Matters

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
She says: Some people—may Allah guide them—dress their young girls in short clothes, and they dress the boys in somewhat long clothes. What is your advice to such people?

Answer:
This is a mistake, and it is the opposite of what is prescribed. This is the opposite of what is prescribed. What is prescribed is that they dress the girls in long clothing so that they become accustomed to it and it becomes their natural disposition. And they should dress the boys in clothing that is above the ankles so that they become accustomed to it. This is what is prescribed.
It is not permissible for a Muslim man or a Muslim woman to raise their children in opposition to what is prescribed. The believer raises his children according to what is prescribed, and the believing woman does the same. The young girl is raised to wear long clothing so that she becomes accustomed to it, and she is raised to cover herself and not to be lax in matters. This is what is prescribed for everyone.
The boy is raised according to the Shari'ah, so that his clothes are above the ankles. He is not raised to smoke, or to drink intoxicants, or to be undutiful to his parents, or to curse. No, he is warned against that so that he does not become accustomed to cursing his parents, or being undutiful to them, or smoking, or drinking intoxicants. Even if he is small, he is raised upon the truth so that he becomes upright, even if by striking.
Likewise, the girl is raised upon goodness, upon beautiful character, and upon covering her 'awrah (the part of the body that must be covered) to the best of her ability, with kind words and good manner, even if by striking when necessary. So when she reaches maturity, she will have become upright upon goodness, guidance, and righteousness. May Allah be our helper. Yes.
