Question:
After that, we move on to the message from Umm Abdullah from Yemen. She says: I had a daughter who was struck by an illness at the beginning of the month of Ramadan, and she did not fast except for three days. This illness continued with her until the beginning of Muharram, and then she passed away. The question is: Is it obligatory for us to fast Ramadan on her behalf? And is it only one person who fasts on her behalf, or is it possible for the mother and the children to participate in making up the fast for her? May Allah reward you.
Answer:
If she died while being unable to fast because of the illness, then she owes nothing, and no one fasts on her behalf, because she is excused. And Allah the Exalted says: [al-Baqarah: 185] meaning: after recovery, and after travel. But if she recovered and was lax until the days passed in which she was able to fast, then it is prescribed for her relatives to fast on her behalf, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih Muslim 1147 meaning: her relative, her mother, her sisters, and her brothers; there is no harm if they fast on her behalf, even if they share in it.
So if she had, for example, twenty days, if she had twenty days, and they fasted on her behalf, each one fasts five; four, each one fasts five, or five fast, each one fasts four, or ten fast, each one fasts two days; there is no harm.
But if she died while in her illness, then she owes nothing, and no one fasts on her behalf.
