The Meaning of Transgression in Supplication
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner says, Your Eminence the Shaykh: What is the meaning of transgression in supplication?
Answer:
It is to supplicate with other than a legislated supplication; this is transgression. Or to raise one’s voice in a place where one is required to be silent. Or to seek nearness to Allah through means that are not prescribed. Or to curse someone who does not deserve to be cursed. All of this is transgression. For this reason, in the authentic hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:.
So if he transgresses by saying, “O Allah, fight so-and-so without right,” or “O Allah, destroy so-and-so without right,” or “O Allah, ruin his wealth,” or “blind his sight,” or such things that harm him without right, this is transgression. Or if he curses his relatives… his brother… his kinsman without right; his maternal uncle… his paternal uncle… his father without right. This involves severing family ties, so it is not permissible, and this is also a form of transgression.
And among the forms of transgression, according to some scholars, is raising one’s voice in a place where raising it is not prescribed, such as raising one’s voice in supplication during prostration, or between the two prostrations, or at the end of the tashahhud, thereby disturbing people. It is better for the supplication to be between him and his Lord. Raising one’s voice in these situations is feared to be a form of transgression. For this reason, He, the Exalted, said: [Al-A’raf: 55]. This indicates that lowering one’s voice is among the etiquettes of supplication, unless one is safe from harm, such as the supplication of qunut and the supplication of the khutbah. In these cases, one is safe, so one raises one’s voice so that the people can hear. As for supplication between one and his Lord, the Sunnah is to lower one’s voice in prostration… at the end of the prayer… and in other instances. The Sunnah is to lower one’s voice. For this reason, He, (Exalted and Majestic is He), said: [Al-A’raf: 55].
So the point is: The Sunnah for the believer is to strive to lower his voice in supplication if he is safe from harm, whether in his prostration, or in the tashahhud, or at any time. He should strive to keep it a secret between him and his Lord. Yes.

No servant supplicates to Allah with a supplication that contains no sin and no severing of family ties, but that Allah will give him one of three things: either he will be granted his supplication in this world, or it will be stored for him in the Hereafter, or He will avert from him an equivalent amount of evil.
